Content Creators Are Fighting an Uphill Battle!

It may seem like content creators have it made.

After all, they get to work from home with their flexible hours and pour all their time and energy into their passions. They also get the freedom and finances to travel, afford homes or nice apartments, and many of life’s other luxuries that people working a basic nine to five can’t even afford.

Not to mention, the world craves all digital content, from all kinds of niches. Therefore, there will never be a shortage in terms of the need for content creators.

So why must content creators continue to fight an uphill battle just to earn a steady and predictable income?

Here’s what they’re dealing with:

Demonetization

Many content creators out there make their coin by posting videos to YouTube. However, back in 2016, a little something known as demonetization was implemented, which consisted of videos not meeting the platform’s “strict guidelines” becoming demonetized — without warning.

This tactic — or, form of punishment — has echoed throughout several platforms ever since, and is currently happening on OnlyFans for the sexually explicit content that is what gave the company its overwhelming success.

Limiting Algorithms

Many content creators rely on social media platforms, like Instagram, to get eyes on their content which will hopefully lead viewers to their subscription-based accounts. Unfortunately, IG’s algorithms are prioritized by “likelihoods,” which is the probability that viewers would want to see certain content based on their individual activity.

Additionally, the algorithms for subscription-based platforms such as OnlyFans and Patreon are based on “account performance,” which is a reward-based structure. Unfortunately, that means that the famously explicit content overpowers everyone else’s content, leaving the average struggling content creator in the dust — unless they decide to show a little something extra.

Low Payments

One word: Fees!

Most platforms take up to 20% off the top from their creators’ accounts. However, this doesn’t include currency conversion fees and deposit fees, which range from 2.5%-5% on top of each platform’s initial cut.

This has been a top complaint among many creators using the platforms. Additionally, it’s next to impossible to monetize regular social media channels such as Facebook or Instagram as it involves affiliate and influencer partnerships, which aren’t so easy to come by.

Account Banning and a Lack of Support

It’s both very difficult and very easy to get your account banned on virtually all social media platforms.

The most common reasons for accounts getting banned include repeated violations, such as disapproved ads and complaints from users. Content creators can also get shadow banned without even knowing it, which is when their content suddenly stops showing up and cannot be searched for a period of time.

What’s worse is the lack of support. Most platforms offer support via email system, which not only takes time in terms of responses, but often those responses are unsatisfactory as they don’t explain nor protect the creators in question.

Limited Freedom of Speech and Expression

Another issue that has plagued social media platforms for a while now is that “free speech” and “freedom of expression” have become insoluble.

We all know that Facebook has become both a political forum and digital manifesto for misinformation that causes violations in policy just as we know that several platforms, including Tumblr, Patreon, and now OnlyFans are now banning explicit material.

There’s no telling where the line is anymore between what a content creator can and can’t do in terms of how they express their art and the message they have to convey. Therefore, they run the risk of their accounts getting banned or completely cut off — which means their income stream gets cut off as well.

Fake Accounts

Not only are fake accounts sucking up all the algorithm juice, but they’re also negatively influencing every possible digital conversation known to man.

“Fake account” is essentially an umbrella term for bots, bought followers, and fake influencers — and not only are they stepping on the toes of creators, but they’re making the internet dangerous for the average person as many of them are designed to steal your personal information.
